Montevideo
Montevideo is located on the banks of the Minnesota and Chippewa rivers. During the 1700s, Europeans established a fur-trading post near the rivers and traded with area tribes. After the city was platted, Montevideo became an agricultural center.
In 1940 a sister city relationship was established with Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1949 the Uruguayan community presented a statue of Jose Artigas, Uruguay's leader of independence, to Montevideo. The statue still stands in the downtown mall.
Montevideo is the county seat for Chippewa county and the business and marketing hub for the many communities in the surrounding area. Communities nearest to Montevideo include Watson, Milan, Maynard, Granite Falls, Dawson, Madison, and Clara City. Montevideo is located 140 miles west of the Twin Cities and 45 miles east of the South Dakota border. Major highways connected to the community are Minnesota highway 7, Minnesota highway 59, and US highway 212.
Montevideo, know as the "City of Parks," has six wooded parks covering 100 acres. The 18-hole golf course and outdoor swimming pool with a 150-foot water slide, are summer past times for many of the residents, visitors and guests of the community. Lagoon Park provides campsites within the city limits and all parks provide picnic facilities.
In June the city celebrates Fiesta Days in honor of the sister-city in Uruguay. The week long event is finalized with a parade and crowning of the new Fiesta Queen. In August the County Fair is held at the local fair grounds with many events and entertainment.
Area attractions include Chippewa City (Pioneer Village), Camp Release State Monument, Lac qui Parle State Park, Lac qui Parle Mission, Olaf Swenson Farm Museum, and many local and area parks.
